Shadowed in the Middle (困中)

Shadowed-in-the-Middle
Acrylic on Canvas. 24" x 24". October 2003.

This painting is one of my first painting that really studies the color of yellow and burnt umber in acrylic format. I have also incorporated a lot of texture into the painting by mixing acrylic paint with a type of sand-like pigment called 'Pumice Stone', to give the painting a very 3D effect.

I am very impressed by my first viewing of these three pieces. Shadowed in the middle is a particularly capitvbating image that I would like to see now in the original.
The whole website is a great beginning to showing your work. I look forward to seeing more.

"Shadowed in the Middle" is the first painting shown in the website that is new to me. Not just because I haven't seen it before, but the feeling it brings to me is brand new. Maybe this is the first time looking at your work without surrounded by your questions. =P

I read this work alone, in silence. The lights are off in my house, and the painting suggests a blank stage to me. With no props and backdrop, a man stands in the middle of the stage (a bit offstage), with pars and profiles lighting on him. He can't escape from the light, nor the stage. He stands still there, details can't be seen. All I can see is the shadow, but we can't tell much from the shadow.

It brings me feeling of being trapped, total exposure in public (although a small one), don't want to stay but yet can't leave too.
